Confession from a former Atheist

On this blog we have been posting answers to questions submitted at La Croix Church over the course of a six-week series called "The Problem with God." We received nearly 200 questions. Like the others, today's post came anonymously from someone in our congregation. Though it's not a question, it is an interesting observation.

This is not a question, but a confession from a former atheist. Atheists want to believe they... are too smart to believe and boast of their intelligence and demean believers to increase their pride. But in reality, atheists are trying to overcome their greatest fear…that maybe Christians are right. That is why they work so hard to convince the world there is no God. If NO ONE believes then there could not possibly be a God. The truth is atheists do not have anything to believe in. There is no other reason for life…this world…or anything if you do not believe in God. The truth is atheists live a life of fear and sadness without knowing why!

Okay, I couldn't let this one go by without commenting.
What an arrogant, condescending statement. So, no one on this earth besides Christians "have anything to believe in", or "reason for life". And we "demean believers to increase our pride"
Wow. This is all news to me, and I've been an atheist who has been studying both sides of the debate for 15 years.
I must say that I'm disappointed in your decision to post this rather unlettered rant by an apparently hateful fundamentalist.
If you do not want to be catagorized as an unthinking, judgemental group of people, this letter certainly does not help the matter.
Thanks,
Scott P.

Scott: We have submitted nearly 70 posts from people at our church, unedited. The thoughtful reflections and courteous responses given in the numerous reflections demonstrate that we are not an "unthinking judgmental group of people." The entirety of this blog speaks for itself. I'm sorry you take offense to this entry; it is someone's opinion. We have allowed all opinions to be posted.

Scott,

Thanks for posting! However, I think Ron has a point here. We have tried to be extremely respectful of everyone. I would encourage you read the purpose of this blog. We may not agree all the time, but I feel like we have had a pretty wonderful dialog going on this blog for the past several months. Would anyone else agree with me?

The post is from a former atheist and I would guess that it was his or her experience. It may not be your experience as an atheist, or your thoughts about belief or unbelief, so I understand how you may not want him or her to speak for you.

But it isn't our church commenting on it, it is a former atheist giving a personal opinion. You know what they say, it is the former smokers who are the toughest on smoking.
